The Sweatshirt

Who would want a golf t shirt that makes you sweat? Or a sweaty shirt for that matter? Where did the name come from? The sweatshirt was actually invented in the 1920’s by Benjamin Russell Jr. who played football for the University of Alabama. The existing uniforms were hot and very itchy, which caused Russell Jr. to seek a more versatile and comfortable alternative. Ben Russell Sr. who started Russell Athletic in 1902, helped develop his sons idea into what is now an iconic fashion piece we call the sweatshirt. Original crewneck sweatshirts often had an inset triangle by the neckline to reinforce the collar and help keep it from stretching out. This detail can be seen today in many of the vintage inspired designs in the marketplace.
